Birch Point continues to be the walleye hotspot for ice anglers. The best bet is earlier in the day in 25 to 30 feet of water. Shiner minnows and jigging spoons are working for the walleye while large minnows are pulling in some sizeable northern pike. The big pike are more prevalent around the Rainy Lake City area of Black Bay.
The snowmobile trail from Rainy Lake through to Crane Lake is open and staked. The National Park Service warns that the on-land portages along the lake trails may be in rough shape. Some snow is in the forecast, and that’s what is needed to build a better base to groom. Cross country skiers will be looking for a bit more snow as well. Anglers are venturing to other areas on the lake, but birch Point and Black Bay have been the most popular and productive.
Voyageurs National Park has staked and opened the Kabetogama to Crane Lake trail so you can now sled from the Rainy Lake Visitor Center, through Kabetogama to Ash River and on to Crane Lake. Snowshoe and ski trails are getting some use and a little fresh snow will be welcome this weekend. Walleye are more likely around Birch Point and a mix of Walleye and Northern Pike more likely around Rainy Lake City. Jigging with minnows has been working best.
Accessibility is increasing on Rainy Lake with the opening of the snowmobile trail from Black Bay to Kabetogama. While the trail is staked and open, the other trails remain closed for now. Snowshoe trails are open and some cross country ski trails are being used but are not yet officially open.
