Border Waters regulations extend the walleye season to April 14, 2015. That means the latest season ice fishing for walleye in Minnesota. lately, the walleye bite has been best in 25 to 35 feet of water arounhd Birch Point in Sand Bay. Jigging with minnows in the morning hours has been most productive. Meanwhile, to the east, some pretty good size northern pike are being caught around Rainy Lake City.
Koochiching County is monitoring Rainy River, and when it is safe to do so, they will clear the public accesses most likely starting with Nelson Park at Birchdale. We will keep you informed on when the ramps open.
Snowmobilers are finding trails in pretty good shape. The onland trails are nicely groomed, it’s the lake surfaces that are a bit rough. Portions of the Voyageurs National Park trails have been rerouted for safety. Those areas are primarily on Namakan and are clearly marked. The Voyageurs National Park has been one of the best areas to snowmobile in Minnesota all winter. No snow where you are? Head our way, we have snow!
