The Tilson Bay and Echo Bay ski trails are open and the snowshoe trails in Voyageurs National Park are also available. The VNP snowmobile trails will be marked and opened as soon as the ice is safe and the same goes for the ice roads. On-Land snowmobile trails are seeing use, but it would be nice to have a little more snow for the groomers.
Some folks have ventured onto the ice to try for some winter fish, the results have been mixed. Keep in mind that options are pretty limited until we get enough ice. So here’s the safety first pitch. You need four inches to walk on and I’d learn toward five. You should have six to eight inches for an ATV or snowmobile and ten to twelve for a light truck. If you venture on the ice, take safety gear with you like picks and a rope.
Colder weather is in the forecast as we enter 2016 so Rainy should be forming ice fairly quickly, we’ll keep you posted. Best wishes to all for a very happy and prosperous year ins 2016
