It’s cold today, especially after the balmy weather we’ve been having. The forecast is for cold and clear through the weekend, but then it’ll warm up a bit. The earlier warm weather helped clear ice from the Little Fork and Big Fork Rivers and water clarity has been steadily improving in Rainy River. Sturgeon fishing has been pretty good, while the walleye bite was a bit slow as all the debris from the Forks hit. Walleye anglers are expecting the bite will pick up over the weekend.
For walleye, try a jig and minnow just off the bottom, or slowly pull a spinner rig and minnow against the current. For Sturgeon, use heavier gear and a heavy sinker with a fair sized hook baited with worms just off the bottom. These fish can get to very large sizes and make for great photos. Be sure to catch and release them quickly. Hold the fish horizontally to snap a photo, holding them vertically can damage internal organs.
Walleye fishing remains open on Rainy River until April 14, and sturgeon fishing is strictly catch-and-release until the tag season opens April 24.
