International Falls is made famous by the unforgettable beauty and big catch that comes from Rainy Lake, but you might be missing out on more fishing opportunities in the fall and spring on Rainy River. Due to the border waters (Rainy River borders Canada and United States), there is a special regulation that allows some fishing seasons to be open longer or not close at all. When you visit Rainy Lake, explore the Rainy River. Here's 3 reasons why.
TOP 3 REASONS TO FISH RAINY RIVER
1. The walleye fishing season is longer (from Mid May to Mid April)
2. You can fish the "living fossil": Sturgeon
3. Bass and Northern Pike fishing is open year round (the fishing season for Bass and Norther Pike does not close on Rainy River) The best time to fish on Rainy River is the fall and spring. Other Rainy River facts

A return of summer-like weather brought out more anglers on Rainy River. I was able to check with a group pulling out their boat at the Ron Hall access on Shorewood Drive in International Falls and they had done well fishing for walleye in the current and structure below the dam. Grouse hunters say they have been seeing more birds now that much of the cover has come down. The DNR has speculated this might be the peak population year for grouse this decade. Koochiching County has miles of hunter walking trails and we could send you a map. Use the information request form on the website and mention you'd like the walking trails map. Yes, it's been calm on our waters, everyone appears to be busy with fall projects or heading to the hunting grounds. I couldn't find anyone that had recently gone fishing on either the Lake or River so the best I can do is repeat what I was told last week. Walleye are running up the river chasing emerald shiners and can be caught along the weedy edges of bends or where you find a bit more current. On Rainy Lake, the best fishing was for crappie in the west end of Black Bay. Bird hunters are getting out more with several dry sunny days helping knock down more of the forest cover. Hunters believe they are seeing more grouse, but waterfowl hunters have been disappointed with seeing few migrating birds. If you're just out for the fall colors, this will probably be the last weekend as the leaves are coming down daily. Some trees though have just turned and will hold some colors into next week |
