The forecast looks good for a nice weekend with fairly warm weather. It will be a great time to get our on Rainy Lake for some recreation. If walleye fishing is part of the plan the word is the walleye are responding to jigs tipped with minnows on the submerged humps now. You will also find some hanging on the windward side of the islands. Along the shorelines, you will probably do better slow trolling a spinner rig.
If you just want to enjoy a hike and some scenery, the “Voyageur” Boat Tours begin Sunday, June 19 with a grand tour. The trip will involve stopping a Little American Island to explore the site of the 1890’s gold mine as well as cruising through spectacular scenery where you are sure to spot some wildlife. You will find the tour schedule (and many other events) on our Calendar of Events on the menu bar above. Yes, Summer has arrived. We are having pretty moderate temperatures with the longer days and enough rain to lower the fire danger. The weather was perfect for a hike around Little American Island and a boat tour of the west end of Rainy Lake yesterday. The Convention and Visitors bureau hosted some travel writers for that tour. We chatted with some anglers and heard the walleye bite is pretty good using brighter colored jigs tipped with minnows. They were tight lipped about where this was working but did let it slip that they were graphing fish mostly in 15 to 20 feet. It’s a pretty good bet the best fishing will be on the windblown shorelines.
On Rainy River, the word is walleye are in 5 to 12 feet of water below the dam at International Falls. Above the dam, the best fishing has been right below the Ranier Rapids. Smallmouth bass fishing has been good below the dam as well |
