Most ice anglers have made the switch to trying the open waters on Rainy River. The River is now open all the way to Lake of the Woods and walleye fishing has been good. Some of the best areas involve current, like below the dam at International Falls and below the rapids near Indus and Birchdale. Jigging with minnows has been working best. The launches at International Falls, Pelland Junction, Birchdale, Frontier and Vidas are all open and operating smoothly.
Birders should be thinking about a trip north. Our area offers a variety of habitat that concentrates many migrating birds in the area. Some will continue north to nest, some will settle in here, but the point is they are on the move now Although ice anglers are still getting out on Rainy Lake, the real focus lately has been the open waters of Rainy River. All the launches from International Falls to the Koochiching County line are now open and walleye anglers are trying to take advantage of the extended season on the border waters. Fishing has been best where there is some current and walleye are responding to shiner minnows on spinner rigs. Sturgeon are open for catch-and-release in the spring and some have been trying to get the photo of a lifetime. Word is the sturgeon fishing has been a little slow, but those having success are putting their bait on a bare hook and trying to keep it about 6 inches off the bottom.
If birding is your thing, there have been quite a few songbirds and waterfowl heading north, some will migrate into Canada to next, some are settling in to nest right around here. Our area is a designated important birding area because of the variety of birds that migrate or nest in the area. The CVB can provide birding booklets/checklists if you wish. Email us your mailing address and we’ll get you a copy. Otherwise, information is available on this website, just look under the Things to do tab |
