The National Park Service has now staked the lake trails from the Rainy Lake Visitor Center to Kettle Falls and to Ash River, the East Namakan trails are also staked and open. There are trails outside of the Park aqs well, and the International Voyageurs Snowmobile Club does a great job of grooming the trails and posting trail reports on their website at www.ridetheborder.com The recent cold snap is also producing ice on Rainy Lake and anglers are finding generally safe conditions to get out to some likely areas. Err on the side of safety if you head out. Word is the walleye and crappie are most likely to bit in early afternoon and they are preferring minnows on a jig. Some good sized pike are more likely earlier in the day. A few popular spots have been around Birch Point, near Rainy Lake City and around the east end of Grindstone Island
We had enough fresh snow to shovel off the walks and there’s more in the forecast. There’s also a cold front from northern Canada settling in, so Rainy Lake ice conditions will be improving, not that they’re all that bad. The Green Trail in Voyageurs National Park is now staked and open, as are many of the ski and snowshoe trails. The Green Trail heads through Black Bay from the Rainy Lake Visitor Center, then crosses a safety portage to Kabetogama and on to the Ash River Community.
Ice anglers are getting out on Rainy Lake but results are apparently varied. There are reports of generally 8 to 10 inches of ice and people are heading for the popular, that is to say, likely spots for walleye. The best bite has been in the morning, small minnows on jigs are working. We will keep you posted on when the National Park ice road opens for the season. |
