So how’s the fishing? Well, a check with anglers shows quite a range of possibilities. Walleye have been active on the reefs in anywhere from 20 to 35 feet of water. Jigging with a minnow or crawler has been most popular. Those that are slow trolling a spinner tipped with a minnow, leech or crawler are also having some success. Word is to fish the reefs in the full Sun of the day, and if it’s cloudy and windy, try along the windy island shorelines in 12 to 20 feet of water. Smallmouth bass have been hitting on topwaters along the rocky shorelines. another presentation that has been working is a 1/8 ounce colored jig and artificial baits while fishing near weed beds. Speaking of weeds, that’s where the lunker northern pike are hanging out, look for 7 to 12 feet of water near the weed beds. If fishing isn’t your thing, try some of the hiking trails and a little wildlife watching. Whitetail deer and their spring fawns are all out browsing the lush foliage, there have been sightings of Ruffed Grouse with their young broods foraging near trails as well. There are beaver pond trails in the National Park where you very well might spot a beaver or two as well. Or, just head for International Falls City Beach or the beach in Ranier and soak up some sun and splash in some water |
