Rainy Lake Fishing Guides/Outfitter Services

guides

Rainy Lake guides are U.S. Coast Guard licensed and meet all Federal requirements to assure your safety. Guides also provide insight into the methods to fish our large, structure filled Canadian shield lake. Common species in Rainy Lake include walleye, smallmouth bass (named to the top 100 bass lakes in the U.S. by BassMasters in 2012 and 2013) northern pike and crappie. Additionally, there are sturgeon to be caught in Rainy River. A tag season allows you to keep one trophy sturgeon, otherwise that sport is catch-and-release only. Guides are well aware of the seasonal changes in fishing methods, whether it is spring fishing, open water or ice fishing.

Outfitters can provide insight into the fishing possibilities as well as set you up with the equipment you will need, not only to catch fish, but to set up camp. Outfitters also provide transportation, or the option to rent a canoe. Contact any of the guide and outfitter services listed to find out what to expect when you are here.

Resorts and Houseboat operations work with guides and could take care of all your arrangements, from booking a guide and obtaining all the proper licenses and permits to fish either side of the border to setting you up with shore lunch. Shore lunch, if you didn’t know, involves your guide preparing the flopping fresh morning catch (breaded and fried) and served with fried potatoes and baked beans with an appetizer traditional to Rainy Lake, a bacon and onion sandwich served with a splash of lemon juice. Rainy Lake and Rainy River are border waters, and regulations keep the walleye season open until Mid-April, whereas the season closes at the end of February for inland waters. The regulations allow for the latest possible ice fishing, and earliest possible open water walleye fishing in the state. Northern pike and smallmouth bass seasons are always open.
