Best Minnesota Sturgeon Fishing-Rainy River

Boat access all along Rainy River are busy now. Sturgeon and walleye are running upriver from Lake of the Woods. The border waters walleye season extends to April 14, and the sturgeon catch-and-release season is open until May 16, 2017.

Recovery of the sturgeon in Rainy River continues to improve. They grow to huge sizes but it takes decades and decades. Sturgeon fishing is closed all together May 16-June 30, 2017 to allow for spawning. There is a tag season when an angler with a tag can take one sturgeon that fits within a slot limit intended to keep all the breeding size sturgeon in the waters.

Spring is a great time for a scenic drive, take the Waters of the Dancing Sky Scenic Byway for example. The byway starts at Sha Sha Point on Rainy Lake and heads west along Minnesota 11 through the Rainy River Valley. Along the way, you can visit the Voyageurs National Park Rainy Lake Visitor Center and check out the lakeside resorts and houseboat operations. At the Lakeside community of Ranier you can get a photo with Vic the Voyageur, see the rapids where Rainy Lake flows out into Rainy River, observe traffic at the busiest rail port in the United States or check out the cool little shops and pubs. In International Falls, there’s Smokey Bear, the Koochiching Museums, historic buildings, quirky roadside art, hiking and biking trails, great gear and gift shops and a variety of restaurants. Stop in our offices to ask about cool places to stop heading further west.

The Waters of the Dancing Sky byway is named for the northern lights that just might be dancing in the sky at any time. We have an excellent Pattiz Brothers film under the Voyageurs National Park tab above, it includes a fantastic display of the aurora borealis.
